WiFi "free" like the roads?

I’ve noticed that some people seem to think that municipal WiFi projects should be owned by the city and provided for “free” to the citizens.

Because the roads are so great. Right?

The last thing I want is an Internet infrastructure built and managed as poorly as roads. Competition leads to better products. Monopolies lead to stagnation and rent seeking. It doesn’t mater if the monopoly is a city, a cable company or a telco.
