I actually got a new perspective on the import laws after talking firearms with a new coworker. His family is from Taiwan, and his dad used to import firearms. From hearing him talk, it's not unlikely that a lot of U.S. companies pushed for the changes, because the importers were killing them (in the economic/financial sense) in the gun market.

A Ruger Charger is legal. The exact same parts on an identical receiver that started as a 10/22 are not.

A dimple in the grip is required for my XD to be legal to import.

My Keltec can't be imported, but is perfectly legal to build and sell in the US.

I can legally carry a handgun concealed in around 30 states, but I can only buy a handgun in one state.

In some of the states where a new 11 round mag is illegal, an old enough one is legal.

Gun control laws are designed to make it difficult for honest people to own or carry a gun.

They make perfect sense if that is your goal. These are not bugs ... it is working as designed.
