WANT! USB/AC outlet

The only thing announced from Macworld this year that made me say WANT!

From FastMac:

Our custom TruePower U-Socket power outlet solution includes two Universal Serial Bus (USB) charge ports in addition to the two standard three prong power outlet ports.

Perfect for charging any USB powered device including- mobile, iPod, iPhone, PDA, MP3, PSP, MP4 player & digital camera.

Specifications:
Input voltage: AC 100 to 240V 50/60Hz
USB input current: 80mA
Output voltage: USB: DC 5.0V 600mA
Operation temperature: -15 to 45 Degrees Celsius
Relative humidity: < 95% Air pressure: 86 to 106kPa

I’m sure I’ll put one in every room.

This is cool too:

Please also note that the USB ports only draw power when something is physically connected to the port. We didn’t want a vampire port that continually sucks and wastes power when not in use so this was one of the features on the top of our priority list during the design phase.

FTC: Bite me.

    wow. . . . . awesome. . . . .
One of those simple, yet brilliant ideas that make you smack your forehead & say, “WHY DIDN’T I THINK OF THAT”.

    That’s NICE!!!

This does look fairly cool, Alan, but I wonder; with computer technology changing so rapidly, would it be worth the cost of wiring up your home with possibly obsolete tech? Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think USB is going away anytime soon, but personally I suffer from early-adopter fear. The way things are invented and outmoded so quickly makes me reluctant to spend a lot on anything until it’s been around for a while. Plus, being a cheapskate, I get to wait until prices come down 😉
I have been enjoying all the VC episodes lately, by the way. Keep up the good work, I for one appreciate it!
