Today in History: Gorbachev Resigned

Not with a bang, but with a whimper.

On December 25, 1991, Gorbachev resigned as president of the USSR, declaring the office extinct and ceding all the powers still vested in it to the president of Russia: Yeltsin. On the night of that same day, the Soviet flag was lowered for the last time over the Kremlin.

Of course if the commies in the US government hadn’t subsidized the communists in Russia it wouldn’t have lasted as long as it did.

    I remember that day vividly. It was the day that I learned that speaking Russian in the military wasn’t as valuable as it once was.

    It was a day that changed the world as we knew it, and yes, it came about 5 years too late! Had it not been for the grain shipments and foreign aid… sigh…
