Why anti-open carry? Fear

If you’re anti-X then it’s pretty likely that you’re afraid of X. Most people aren’t anti-things they’re not afraid of.

I think the anti-open carry folks are scared to open carry much like the anti-gun folks are scared of guns. You see the same nonsensical arguments from both groups. The anti-gun people are afraid of guns so they want them all banned. The anti-open carry people are afraid to open carry so they want to limit or ban open carry.

If no one can open carry then they don’t have to admit they’re afraid.

    Excellent point Alan!

  2. Nice. My view is that it should be personal choice whether or not to open carry.

I wouldn’t do it, but that’s just me. I don’t want to stop others from doing it though.

  3. Southern Belle: ur doin it rite. I wish everyone who didn’t want to OC would quit railing against it.

    game, set, match!

    I think you’re right-on with that one!

  5. Speakertweaker: Thanks. I’m a live and let live kind of gal. Guns aren’t scarey unless some asshat is waving it around all willy-nilly and stuff. I think that the idea that people might walk around with guns on their hips scares all the mamby-pambies out there, which is ridiculous.

While I would like to see open-carry become accepted, it isn’t there yet, especially in blue states. And there are significant risks with open-carry, in terms of social backlash, increased chances of a gun-grab, loss of the element of surprise, etc.

The chance of a tense encounter with the police increases dramatically when open carrying. While you might be perfectly within your rights to open-carry, you cannot guarantee that the police are aware of that. Given the increasing incidence of mistaken no-knock raids, beatings and shootings by the police, tempting fate by inviting extra attention seems unwise.

And not every person who open-carries does so in a calm, reasonable manner. Those of us who are responsible gun owners end up getting lumped in with grandstanding attention-whores like the kid who dragged a shotgun into the children’s section of a public library.

Unless I want to use an openly-carried gun expressly as a deterrent, such as during a time of civil unrest, I’ll pass on open-carry.

What is it with the anti open carry crowd simply copy-pasting comments onto different blogs?

You left the identical comment, word for word, on my blog Gunnutmegger. Try writing something original.

Considering how much you lump average open carriers (arguably the majority) with the attention-whoring outliers, that comment, from you, is damned near hysterical.

And how better to counter the attention-whoring outliers that with more people calmly and reasonably open-carrying?
