20 years then and now

This article got me thinking about pop culture and changes over generations.

Rock Around The Clock was the theme song of the immensely popular TV show, Happy Days, which was filmed in the 70s and was about the 50s. One of the things that made the show so popular was the obvious differences between the 70s and the 50s. (That format was tried again, not nearly as successfully later in That 70’s Show)

A show about a similar difference made today would be about the 90s. But other than the Internet and cell phones there isn’t that much difference between the 90s and today. Pop culture is pretty much the same.

It’s interesting to me how some generations see massive, earth shattering changes and others kinda stagnate for a while.

This is all my way of leading up to saying this:

I think we’re due for another one of those big changes.

About the only way for the kids to shock their SWPL parents these days is to join the Young Republicans.

This post reminded of when I was teaching a college writing class in the late 1990s and a student who had watched “Happy Days” a lot wanted to use it to contrast Then and Now, as though it offered an accurate picture of 1950s life.

I said that without Nikita Krushchev and the Cold War, it was not accurate at all, for one thing.
