USA Today has an article covering a report from the Intercollegiate Studies Institute. Students at fifty colleges were tested on history and civic literacy. The overall average was 50.4% for freshmen and 54.2% for seniors.
Debra Humphreys of the Association of American Colleges & Universities says, “It would be wrong to conclude from this study that the leadership of these selective schools is not committed to educating their students about these subjects.”
The average at all colleges tested is a failing grade. How can that not be taken as a lack of commitment?

It’s been sixteen years since I graduated college and I missed four questions for a score of 93.33%. I’m pretty sure I learned most of the subject material in high school, which makes me question the commitment of the entire education system, not just the colleges.
