In an earlier post I talked about how Pennsylvania arrests it’s citizens for buying booze in New Jersey. Now Tennessee joins the fun by announcing that they will arrest Tennesseans who cross the state line to buy out-of-state cigarettes.
Possessing more than 2 cartons is a misdemeanor and more than 25 cartons of out-of-state smokes is now a felony in Tennessee.
It’s all about the money. The taxes on cigarettes help fund education and other state programs, but I wonder what happens when tax increases force more people to stop smoking. Will the state arrest them for tax avoidance?
I bet there’s a bureaucrat thinking about that right now.
