We camped about five miles outside Silverton, up above a creek where we were dredging for gold, I heard the train a lot but didn’t take a ride. I love the high-country up there.
It’s not a bad ride when you’re 30. Especially in the fall, just before they shut it down for winter. That’s some beautiful country, and that rail line runs through some of the best of it.
Hey, I’ve been on that train before! My uncle lost his favorite hat out the window trying to get a picture. Ah, good times…
This is a great ride when you’re 12.
Actually BP, it’s a great ride when you’re on your honey moon, it’s winter time and you have an entire 1st class Parlor Car to yourself!
Hubby and I went to Durango on our honeymoon and went skiing. We took that train, bought first class tickets and were the only ones in first class.
We had our own private bar tender and waitstaff….. it was the best thing EVER!

Anyone remember C.W. McCall, of “Convoy” fame? He wrote a pretty cool song about that railroad.
Hey, Dirtcrashr, can you still pan for gold there without having to be on a claim?
