Maple is probably correct, specifically a Red Maple (acer rubrum). It’s not as common down here in my part of NC as the Sugar Maple (acer saccharinum), but you see a lot of the if you travel about. The Sugar Maple’s leaves turn a lovely gold color in the fall, while the Red Maple’s turn a bright red, or scarlet, as your photo shows.

Correction: Sugar Maple is acer saccharum. Acer saccarinum is the Silver Maple. Two very similar-looking Latin names misled me.
