Not drunk is the new drunk.

Figures this would be in Austin, the filthy hippie capital of Texas.

Art Acevedo, the Austin Chief of Police wants to arrest drivers for drunk driving who aren’t actually drunk.

Arresting drunk drivers makes money, arresting murderers and rapists does not.

  1. Dwight Brown says:

And they’re talking about this because:

    1) Drunk driving arrests are down (gee, you’d think they’d take that as a sign of success), and
    2) The local courts are apparently so flooded with drunk driving cases (hmmmm, but if drunk driving arrests are DOWN, isn’t that a contradiction, or something like it?) that many of the drunk driving cases are being plead down to other misdemeanor offenses that don’t trigger the DWI penalties. So the solution to not effectively prosecuting people is to create a new offense that we probably won’t effectively prosecute people for.

Can you tell Chief Acevedo is originally from California?

  2. Eseell says:

I was always under the impression that you can arrest someone for DWI if they are driving while impaired – by anything – regardless of their BAC. It sounds like what they want is a flat metric rather than a judgment call. That being the case, they can go to hell.

Sounds like… Oh hell… I don’t even know what to say to this… Gotta agree with Dwight!

  4. Stan says:

But murderers and rapist might shoot back! How dare you ask our venerable Only One’s to put their lives in harms way.

  5. Kristopher says:

Separate fines collection from local revenue.

Send the money straight into the state highway funds.

Get local cops back into law enforcement instead of revenue collection.

“Get local cops back into law enforcement instead of revenue collection.”

That’s the problem. Revenue collection *is* “the law”.

    The *law* is wrong.
